The abs. fluorescence quantum yields FF of 10 Ph3C+ derivs., e.g. I and II, were measured and related with the change of bond order between the central C atom and the Ph groups during electronic transitions by MO-SCF-CI calcns. FF is reduced by Ph group rotation only at strong coupling of the p-system to the other part of the mol. Thus, the bond order change is a measure for the coupling.
