Abstract:

Aufbauphase (1945-1955) 3. Expansionsphase (1955-1970) 4. Phase der Internationalisierung (1970-1985) 5. Phase der Globalisierung (seit 1985) Es werden neben den regionalen auch nationale und weltweite Entwicklungen in die Betrachtung einbezogen Studies on the development of the Ruhr area’s industrial economy primarily referred to the coal mining industry and the heavy industry. Textile and clothing industries have not been made object of studies although - for some time - they have led a notable “life at the margin” and this in a double sense by secondarily benefiting from the Ruhr area’s production potential and being located in the peripheral areas of this region. The dissertation is based on the evaluation of extensive statistical and archival material and of the results of a primary data collection. Considered factors are the localisation of the enterprises, their industry classification, number of persons employed, turnover, production conditions and market relations. After discussing the theory of “Long Waves“ [“Lange Wellen”] pursuant to Kondratieff, the development phases are defined. The underlying criteria are the changes of the location factors over the decades. Five phases were identified for the textile industry: 6. Transitional phase (1793-1840) 7. Start-up phase (1840-1875) 8. Expansion phase (1875-1914) 9. Phase of crisis (1914-1945) 10. Phase of decline (starting 1945) Five phases were also defined for the clothing industry: 6. Peripheral clothing industry ( until 1945) 7. Start-up phase (1945-1970) 8. Expansion phase (1955-1970) 9. Phase of internationalization (1970-1985) 10. Globalization phase (since 1985) Besides regional development, also national and international developments are taken into account.
