Abstract:

Examined the convergent validity of the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS) and the influence of social desirability on the scale. A sample of 205 employees of German public utility companies (aged 21-60 years) completed the AISS (with subscales Novelty and Intensity), a German scale assessing socially desirable response behavior (Soziale-Erwuenschtheits-Skala-17, SES-17), as well as a German scale measuring achievement motivation (Leistungsmotivationsinventar, LMI). The willingness towards occupational change served as an external validity criterion, and was assessed by the duration of present employment and the intention of changing the workplace. AISS scores proved to be unaffected by social desirability. Moreover, the intention of changing jobs was predicted by both achievement motivation and the AISS subscale Intensity, whereas employment duration was not associated with sensation seeking. The validity of the AISS, at least of its Intensity subscale, is inferred from a high correspondence with a non-risk behavior from the work sector.
