Abstract:

This paper has two parts. In the first 1 discuss Davidson’s view of evaluations: what is the meaning and function ofprima facie, ‘allthings- considered’ and ‘sans phrase’ judgements, and what is the role of his principle of continence? In the (shorter) second part I try to exploit Davidson’s insights to elucidate the position of Hare: what is it to treat a moral judgement as a prima facie, or as a critical moral judgement, and when is a moral judgement a critical moral judgement?
