Abstract:

Thermodynamic properties of inhomogeneous one dimensional classical systems with nearest neighbor interactions are considered. In particular the partition function of a system of hard core particles with a zero range attractive interaction is determined in the presence of an arbitrary external potential. Different concepts of a local pressure are developed and compared with each other.
