Abstract:
In the social milieu of urban underclasses of the Vormärz-period, the neighborhood of the Sperlingsgasse is distinguished as a form of life which is characterized by mutual relations of solidarity. Raabe employs the idiom of the house to emphasize the commitment implied in those bonds. By this, Raabe counters contemporary bourgeois fears of social anomy directed towards the underclasses, expressed for example in Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl's concept of teh "forth estate".
