Abstract:
Growing rough surfaces are a natural illustration of self-affinity, a term coined some years ago by Benoit Mandelbrot. The Eden model, ballistic deposition and polynucleation growth are well-known examples where such structures emerge. Using the concept of the intrinsic surface width associated with the physical lower cutoff we explain important corrections to scaling and show how anomalous roughening at morphological transitions develops.
